My name is Daniela Mandarano, I have lived in Winnipeg my entire life. I come from a strong ethnic background of Italian and Polish. I feel it is important to know your roots because they truly influence and shape the person you become. For this reason I am culture obsessed and express this through folk dance in a group called Ragazzi Italiani. Dance is my passion, art is my addiction. I chose to be in architecture because design is the catalyst that can influence the change in everything and everyone.
“interstitial space, the spaces between are expressed
through their changeable quality. the void gives life to the
solid. ones relationship to the solid changes according
to the void that surrounds it. they join, at an infinitely thin,
constantly changing threshold.”

Term ONE
Through the act of layering I experimented with the idea of sectioning a two dimensional perspective drawing. I discovered that the act of sectioning the drawing (where each section is its own individual plane) creates a three dimensional experience. Through this experience void spaces are exposed. To understand and experience the void spaces I questioned the relationship between a perspective and elevation drawing. I overlapped the perspective and elevation facades and continued to explore the hidden spaces that exist between them and how I could begin to occupy it.
Term TWO
Continuing on with my interest in void spaces, I chose my site in an alley way connecting Albert and Arthur St. In this alley I discovered a rooftop that my program will inhabit. Using the rooftop area I would like to design a multicultural memorial/cemetery ground. There is something endearingly peaceful and spiritual about a place of memory, a trace of what once was, and is no more.
Through further explorations, I have become interested in the homeless people of Winnipeg as their lives and stories are constantly forgotten act as the voids of our city.
