The creative ability through the form of art has always played an important role in my life. As I come into my third year of architecture at the University of Manitoba, I have realized how I can relate both art and architectural design together. I am now able to apply my artistic abilities to something larger and more substantial.
As a person who has lived in Winnipeg their whole life, I have never spent much time in the Exchange District. I chose Liane's studio group as it would allow me to broaden my outlook on this historical site.
During the first term, I focused my studio project around the concept of what is beyond a surface and the unfolding of the interior and exterior realms. Through the use of a 360 degree pinhole camera, I was able to invert the original site and reverse the normal context of what we actually see, thus revealing a new understanding of site. The camera merged multiple perspectives together as well as the interior and exterior spaces beyond the surface of the facade.
Second Term
I explored a space that is constantly revealing, unfolding and disintegrating as you experience it. I designed a hardware store/ art store that gives back to the exchange by offering classes to any one who walks by. I explored the inhabitable space inside of a facade by separating the interior and exterior walls that open up and reveal new spaces. I also shifted the planes of a building out of their normal context to create new relationships between interior and exterior. I also explored the idea of a dissolving facade that continues to break down as the materials are bought by the customers.
