Bartending to pay the bills and writing music to occupy what remaining free time I have.
I have always been interesting in designing, and architecture seemed to be the most tangible and rewarding form of design possible. Last year, I mostly focused on designing in regards to efficient use of space and material but this year, I wanted to expand my design sensibilities. By joining Liane's studio, I have already learned how to thoroughly re‑examine my site as well as explore ideas through experiential drawings rather than two‑dimensional representations. I'm still learning more forms of exploring an idea, and hope to refine my design process even further by the end of this year.
Last semester, I started with the idea of allowing the changes in my site to define a new site for me. After weeks of observing different construction projects in the area, I decided that I needed to find other ways of representing changes in my site so that it incorporated the surrounding context of the exchange district.
Motivated by the void spaces created by road blocks, a found a new site where instead of recording the shifting in the site, I recorded my shift in view as I observed the site. I drew the resulting shifts in an effort to arrange them in space and time.
I then built a model to further represent my shift in view, by constructing each frame as a layer of the building, and a walkway to manifest my visual path through the building.
This semester, I'm working on connecting the vast culture inside the buildings in the exchange district directly to the street by modifying the historical facades. I want to contribute to the nightlife in the area by adding some sort of bar or music venue, but also use the space during the day for a different function that will benefit the exchange.
